An Excellent Source of Calcium

time: 5:00pm
place: kitchen

Simon: can I have a Fudgy Bar?
me: how about a piece of cheese?
Simon [reading the box of "healthy" chocolate cookies we picked out at Whole Foods yesterday]: Fudgy Bars have 12 essential vitamins and minerals.
me: so they do.
Simon: Daddy says vitamins and minerals are good for you.
me: so they are.
Simon: this has vitamin K and vitamin B-12.
me: ok ok have a fudgy bar.

time: 6:30pm
place: kitchen

Simon: I ate all my food. What can I have for dessert?
me: you already had dessert before dinner.
Jay: Oh? what did you have?
me: one of those cookies. [points to Fudgy Bar bag]
Simon: those aren't cookies.
me:
Simon [reading off the bag of Fudgy Bars]: it says right there: "Healthier than a cookie!"
me:
Jay: you can have 4 chocolate chips.

a convincing argument

Place: Borders, Children's Section
Situation: Simon is picking out a book as a reward. He has two books in front of him. One is cheaper, one is more expensive. I am trying to lead him toward the cheaper book.

Me: Look at this one. It's all about Mummies! It's so cool!
Simon: You think this is cool?
Me: Yes.
Simon: did you look at all the pages?
Me: Yes.
Simon: Did you see the page with all the weapons?
Me: um.
Simon: Do you think weapons are cool?
[long pause]
Me: No.
Simon: I think I'll be getting this other book.

Fair is fair

Me: Have you ever heard of Robin Hood?
Simon: yes.
Me: who was he?
Simon: I don't remember.
Me: He was kind of like a knight.
Simon: with a K?
Me: Yes. He stole money from the rich and gave it to the poor, who really needed it.
Simon: [very concerned look on his face] But he left some money for the rich people too, right?

on "girl knights"

Simon: Play castle with me.
Me: Ok. I'm the girl knight.
Simon: There are no girl knights.
Me: why not?
Simon: Because it wasn't a big enough set. It only came with boy knights.
Me: Well, we can make one of those into a girl knight.
Simon: No.
Me: Why not?
Simon: Girls can't be knights.
Me: Why not?
Simon: Because their hair is too long to fit into the helmets.

Chabads on the Beltway

On the way to school this morning we saw a Chabad House van with a ginormous menorah on top. The menorah had four candles lit up, plus the shamesh.

Simon: They must really love Hanukkah.
Me: yeah, I guess they do!
Simon: But they don't really know much because it's the fifth night of Hanukkah today and they only have four candles lit.

The Postcard Guy

(As told by Judy)

When he was in Copenhagen earlier this month, Lewis sent Simon a postcard.

Sarah: "Look, a postcard!"
Simon: "Yeah."
Sarah: "It came from Bapa!"
Simon: "Of course it did. He's the Postcard Guy."

Just regular lights

(As told by Sarah)

tonight on the way home we were late b/c we stopped to get something and it was getting dark...Simon saw all the Christmas lights in the neighborhood and got all excited, I said we'd take a walk to look at themwith our new 3-D glasses (the ones that turn them all into Jewish stars), blah blah so we were talking about Christmas lights and I said how we weren't going to have any on our house b/c we don't celebrate Christmas and he goes "well, I think we could put up some lights and put a big sign next to them with an arrow pointing that says 'these are just regular lights, they're not Christmas lights.'"
